SSDI & SSI Benefit Lawyers in Cincinnati

How Are Eligibility & Benefits Calculated?

The first question most people ask regarding their Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits is, “Am I eligible?” The second question they usually ask is, “How much can I receive?” This is not a straightforward answer but is one that can be calculated through a bit of careful research and reflection on your personal finances with the help of a knowledgeable attorney.

At The Harris Firm, we are well-versed in the laws and are committed to helping clients receive the benefits they need. Determining eligibility and the amount you may receive is complicated, which is why hiring an attorney is in your best interest. Our goal is to provide personalized guidance that leverages our decades of professional experience. We take the time to explain your options and educate you on every decision regarding your benefits.

Our SSDI and SSI benefit lawyers in Cincinnati can help you through every step of your case, from filing to appeals. Call (513) 953-4336 to get started with a free consultation. We serve clients throughout Blue Ash and Hamilton County.

Supplemental Security Income Benefits

SSI is calculated differently than SSDI because you are not required to pay into the system in order to receive it, and the formula is not designed around your income over your working life. Instead, it’s more complex and takes into account any “countable income,” which is anything you receive during a calendar month that could be used to help pay for things like food and shelter. Any income from a small job, food stamps, gifts, or even money other pay on your behalf toward food and shelter could reduce the number of benefits you receive. A list of possible exclusions can be found on the Social Security Administration’s website.

Your total countable income is then subtracted against the current federal benefit rate (FBR). The FBR also changes annually and is different for single individuals and married couples.
