The Liberty Center located in Liberty Township, Ohio, is one of the bigger construction projects the greater Cincinnati area has seen as of lately, costing nearly $350 million for its development. The entire site spans over 100 acres and is situated between Cincinnati and Dayton at the interchange of I-75 and Ohio 129 (or Liberty Way). It is a mini-city that is expected to be a major regional attraction.
Liberty Center is considered to be a “multi-use center” where people can live, work, and play—all in the same place. It is complete with shopping and dining options, entertainment venues, parks and other recreational areas, office space, luxury residential apartments, and hotels. All in all, it has over 800,000 square feet of retail space, 75,000 square feet of office space, 240 apartments, and a 130-room AC Marriott Hotel.
This community center had its grand opening on October 22, 2015, officially ending construction that has been under way since fall of 2013. During this time, at least a half a dozen general contractors employed hundreds of workers. These included structural iron and steel workers, electricians, roofers, painters, masons and stone workers, carpenters, inspectors, equipment operators, and plumbers—to name a few.
This project has been a huge success so far, and all of the construction workers involved have done an extraordinary job in turning project developer Yaromir Steiner’s vision into a reality.
However, no matter how successful a construction project may be, most of them leave some sort of an imprint on the workers involved. Construction jobs—which encompass quite a few various occupations—are some of the deadliest jobs in the world. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, one in five worker deaths in 2014 were in construction. The majority of these deaths were caused by the fatal four:
- Being struck by an object
- Getting caught in or between objects
